Freaks of Nature

Humans. Vampires. Zombies. And aliens??? WHAAAAT! This movie looks hilarious. And did you recognize a lot of those faces? Nicholas Braun, which appears to be playing the main character, first showed up to me in the TV series, 10 Things I Hate About You (not even comparable to the cult classic movie), and I love his quirkiness so I am excited to see him in a leading role with actors such as Dennis Leary, Vanessa Hudgens, Keegan-Michael Key, Bob Odenkirk(Better Call Saul), Joan Cusack, and Patton Oswalt.
Hoping to watch this movie in the coming week!

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse review

If you follow me on Instagram you would know that I was wanting to see this ASAP. I loved the concept of scouts being in charge of saving us because really those with some wilderness or survival background are more likely not to be dead right away when the zombies come.
I decided for my birthday to go and see this film and man it was worth the money and made for a great date movie with my man. Who doesn't like zombie nudity or strippers? If you get the chance to see this film, both sexes are represented in the nudity area. Of course T&A is more dominant when dealing with high school films.
Things I enjoyed about the film:
  • nudity
  • ridiculous situations they get in
  • the first zombie scene in the film with Blake Anderson from Workaholics
  • the character Carter and any scene with Scout Leader Rogers
  • the old lady neighbour played by Cloris Leachman

Things I didn't really like:
  • the "stripper" girl was a bad actor and I felt her role wasn't really needed
  • why do friends always outcast the "bigger" kid and have him portrayed as a big suck?
  • that I was in a theater where young pre-teen boys were with their grandparents
  • there is a weird Britney Spears singing moment that I wasn't sure what to make of
Overall, I'd see it again!

Monday Mention: Zomboy

Zomboy
by Richard Scrimger

Bob and Evil-O have been friends forever and puberty is not the only thing making their friendship questionable. Imre, a new boy in school, catches the eye of Evil-O. Bob finds Imre weird, gross, cold, and just odd. Well he has a good reason to. After a piano falls on Imre and not a scratch is left on him, the school soon finds out Imre is a survivor from some nuclear something or other and now he is a zombie....or rather zomboy. The school becomes a battle ground for protesters to support Imre or get the undead kid out of there and Imre even runs for class president. But something else is going on that Bob is noticing. Imre is keeping a secret. A secret that could wreck the town if it ever got out.

First off Bob is hilarious. He is kind of a coward, accident prone, and pretty honest as well. Bob as the narrator is what makes the novel. Imre is a little strange beside being a zombie boy and Evil-O is just a chillaxin' girl that believes in everyone. She also has an arch nemesis Susan. Their banter is hilarious! The story is intriguing but I was getting skeptical as to where it was all going and then finally in those last chapters you find out Imre's secret and all the testing and the doctors that Imre has been dealing with. Makes a really exciting ending that I actually didn't see coming. By no means did this book feel really childish like some other junior or elementary books. I kept forgetting these characters weren't in high school.

Cooties movie review

So last weekend here in YXE I managed to attend the film festival the night Cooties was playing. I had mentioned in the summer  I was excited to see this film and I am so thankful it played in my city cause this film is DOPE.

mmmm
First off there are a ton of faces we all know and love. Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, Alison Pill, and Jack McBrayer, are just to name a few and these actors play teachers having to deal with shitty summer school students who end up getting "cooties" from a defective batch of chicken nuggets. Which I must mention in the scene opener the whole chicken nugget process is shown from the chicken on the farm all the way to the plant and into the mouth of a very hungry child. From here all hell breaks lose as the teachers have to last all day in order to get some help and save themselves and two students. Great thing about this virus is if you have gone through puberty, you don't get turned. YAY for menses!

While the plot was slow to start with and the kid zombies could have been better, the cast in this horror comedy makes the audience laugh and the gives us the satisfying sensation to go out a beat up a shitty child. (No actual children. Just zombie ones).
Doug explaining his weekend

I loved the easter egg dealing with Wood, seeing Wilson with facial hair and being a total douche, and the character Doug, which instantly becomes a favorite as soon as we see him reading a book called "How to Have a Normal Conversation”. This dude is far from normal and his role in the movie just gets stranger and funnier.
The part that got the audience really giggling in the beginning is what I am going to leave you with to enjoy and entice you to go out and see this kick-ass film.

Monday Mention: Zombie Elementary: The Real Story

Zombie Elementary: The Real Story
by Howard Whitehouse

Larry Mullet is your typical fourth grader. He's not the biggest kid or the smartest kid or the best looking kid. He rides his bike, plays baseball, takes the school bus, avoids cafeteria food, and--oh yeah, he's a zombie hunting expert. Larry was just doing his usual thing when Alex Bates from Ms Hoag's class tried to eat him. Sadly, that was only the beginning. - Goodreads

While being cute and easy to read for most kids, this story could have used a bit more zombie dialogue than the redundancy of "BRAAAAIIINS" and "AAAAAARGNNNNNN". I did enjoy how the story was set up. Larry is doing a Tell All file to a buddy named Kyle about zombies coming to school, how they got rid of them, and how no adults really seemed to take notice. I enjoyed a character called Chucky and his Grandma since they were kooky and all hillbilly. There was just enough gore like heads being hit off bodies and missing legs but no blood or guts type of gore. It was good for what type of audience this is intended for. I just had such struggles with that redundant zombie noise and how Larry kept trying to explain metaphors or ask if something was a word. It was like the author was trying too hard.

The research, aka movie watching, Larry was doing seemed like content beyond his age and too mature to watch alone. As much as I love zombie flicks, kids should not watch 28 Days Later or WWZ, Resident Evil or Shaun of the Dead.
I thought the layout of the book worked great with a back and forth narrating to a script like dialogue by Larry and the interviewer. Also "Zombie Tips" are thrown through out the book which are both zany and helpful.

Burying the Ex review

Back in June I posted about a new movie trailer called Burying the Ex. Well last night I finally watched it. Let's just say....this could have been worse.

The movie revolves around a horror fan and his overbearing girlfriend who dies and comes back as a zombie due to an evil wish to be together forever. In the film Anton Yelchin, also from Star Trek reboot movies as Chekov, tries to break up with his girlfriend, played Ashley Greene (Twilight series), but on the way over she is struck by a bus and killed. While Yelchin's character finally tries to go after a new girl, Alexandra Daddario, Greene comes back from the dead being her usual possessive self refusing to believe they aren't meant for eachother.
Yelchin as Chekov

Let me be honest here and say I had higher hopes when I saw the trailer versus seeing the film. While I did enjoy Greene's decaying and the one line in the film that had my LOL ("I'm shaving my taint"), the rest of the film was just meh. I don't know if it was the lines, the lack of music or something in the background, the awkwardness of Yelchin and Daddario getting together, or the lack of other support actors besides the half-brother but I felt like something was missing.

I watched Life After Beth, another zombie film not that many knew about, and I LOVED IT! It was funny, witty, just great. I was hoping this was be along those lines but this was awkward at times. AWKWARD=AWKWARD.

Anyways, using my new my review ratings (explained later on ths site) I give this one thumbs up...cuz I didn't completely hate it.

Only YOU can prevent diseases

Everyone can use a little washroom etiquette and what a funny thing to twist in some zombie prevention!
This print from Etsy can be for special occasions, Halloween, or all the time!

Now I think I should get this for my washroom. It isn't an obvious zombie thing so that is why it would fit in any where, any time!

Finally! Cooties to be afraid of

All our kid life we think other little grubby kids in our class, especially of the opposite sex, have cooties. Ew! Gross! Right? Well in the trailer of Cooties, starring Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, Alison Pill, and Jack McBrayer, we now have a cootie problem that will condemn those below the puberty line to the walking dead.

As if teachers didn't take enough flak with snot nosed little pukes (I honestly do like kids. I swear), but now they have to save those from prepubescent zombies.
Out September 18th. Going back to work in the fall cannot come fast enough!
Wait..it can.

Also, how good looking is Elijah Wood still?

iZombie recap: Liv and Let Clive

The Crime:
John Doe aka Sammy Wong, with missing fingers and molars and appears to be from a gang, is from Clive's days in vice squad. Clive becomes real upset and adamant about Liv staying out of helping on this case. The vision she has Clive looking a little like a dirty cop. Turns out Clive was suspended and this has Liv even more freaked. Clive comes to see Liv and lets her know Wong was in witness protection. Sammy had testified against AJ's father in a case which is why Sammy may have been beaten when he came back for a funeral. Ray, who was one of the gang members and a "snitch", turns out to be Clive's old cop buddy. Ray is safe and AJ is arrested for Sammy's murder after he attacks Liv in her home.

Zowers (Zombie Powers):
  • Anxious and fearful aka paranoia
  • Kung Fu

Major news: We get to see Major SHIRTLESS!! Seems like he can't get a great roommate and Liv feels bad since she was to be helping out....buuuuut....in walks a chick in Major's shirt. Oops. Major's new gf, Corin,  and ex get the awkward introduction. Liv gets super jelly and sets up Major and Ravi to meet about being roommates without them knowing. And they BOND! And become flatmates.
Eddie and Jerome now missing..We know who took them Major.

Meanwhile...:
Blaine and Jackie are shacking up. Guess she gives him money, he gives her brains. Sex: Bonus. Also, getting some aesthetician work done is helping Blaine look a little less freaky. And it seems Blaine has made some minions to go and fetch more brains. And the dudes are super brainless in more than one way. They appear to be getting annoyed with being Blaine's work and try to take Blaine's clients/victims for themselves. Blaine finds out and pops them.
We get to see Li'v bro, Evan, again! Seems he is staying at Liv's for awhile and he likes going through Peyton's things.

Nourishment:
Kale and brain smoothie
Rice and Sriracha (Asian meal to go with Asian brain)
Brazed cerebellum ala granola??
Medulla oblongata in a fradiago sauce (These names are killing me)

Brainy lines

  • "Sadly our latest John Doe here won't be handling much of anything"  *insert missing fingers*
  • Liv muttering slut after mocking Corin for helping Major pay the rent.
  • Tag saying: Martial Arts and Craft

Thoughts

  • Liv being like totally like a valley, "slutty" girl while like talking in the video store was like so hilarious.
  • Blaine has a freezer full of frozen zombies. Lovely.

iZombie recap: Brother, Can You Spare A Brain?

So lets dive right in shall we?

The Crime:
A painter, Javier, is found with a paint brush sticking out of his eye. Det. Babineaux (let's call him Det. Babi since he is new to the job) dives right in to asking Liv about her physic abilities. She must be regretting that lie but it seems to work for her the entire show so far. No questions asked. Live hasn't had time yet to eat the brains until she gets to the morgue. There she has a taste and later she has a trigger of seeing a beautiful lady clearly getting it on in an affair with Javier. Liv starts getting all '50 Shades of Phsyic' on Babi with her new artistic view and passion for beauty.

Babi and Live visit Lola, J's wife and the actress from Devious Maids, where we get to see Liv mesmerized by a second wife. YUP! Monogamy not happening here. To make things more complicated, Javier's paint dealer Artie Fiss loves Lola and becomes a prime suspect. Well we were deceived. He was an artifice if I shall say and point that out. (So many play on words you guys!)Artie was just covering for Lola who actually was angry for Javier knocking up Artie's daughter and they were going to have a kid, something Lola thought he didn't want.

Turns out Det. Babi is right....always the wife.

Zowers (Zombie Powers):

  • Painting
  • new love for Jazz
  • drawing
  • artistic vision
  • understands Spanish

Major News:
We get to see more of the old flame. A major hottie. Major comes to return some items and finds Liv painting and listening to music she hated before. Major seems kinda into and Liv is exploding with a new found appreciation in everything.

Episode ends with Liv seeing Major and getting MAJORLY turned down since she has had nothing to do with him the last 7 months. Gurl you can't be trippin' like that!

Meanwhile...:

Blaine to Liv "Where'd you go?"
New character!!! Guys pay attention to Rob Thomas and his dang puns and play on words....Blaine DeBeers.     Read it again.
Blaine was a partier and druggie and it shows in Blaine's talking. Sounds like a stoner when he and Ravi were talking and Liv had a vision.
Although Liv is unsure of Blaine they exchange their zombie knowledge and background. Blaine used to rob graves. I made a connection to the comics. Blaine was going after already dead people like Liv (Gwen) did in the comics. On purpose? Who knows with Mr.Thomas.
Blaine calls his zombie hulking out "raging out". I giggled. Euphemism came to my sick ol' brain. Full on zombie mode sounds better Blaine.
Sounds like our Zs miss food. Who knew brains were gross?
We get to see a bit of Blaine's life and turns out he has a one night stand and she becomes a Z. Seems like he is making money off of some rich lady. Guess the drive for cash doesn't die with you.
Blaine what are you up to.

Sidenote: Blaine, played by David Anders, has also been Dr. Frankenstein and a founding family in the land of Vampires. Likes the goth lit :).

Nourishment: hot pocket and then straight up brains

Brainy lines:

  • "Boss thought you were dead" "They were half right".  - Blaine to his buddy.
  • First rule of brain club
  • "Albino tease" - said to Liv from the very rapey ex-bf of Javier's other wife.
  • "..so maybe its possible for parts of me to spring to life even now that I'm dead." - Liv
Thoughts:
  • Nightmares. Zombies have dreams? I guess they have visions, don't really enjoy the taste or consistency of brains, gain other "powers"...so dreams shouldn't be a shock
  • Dect. Little too eager to use Liv's skills
  • They look so goth! I'm just looking for the chipped black nail polish next.
  • Can these Zs have sex? Did Blaine just eat the lady....wait....um..I can't even back my way out of that one.

Until next week zombaes!

Don't have a Zombie Man: Zombie Simpsons

I play lame little games on my tablet everyday and one that I keep up with is The Simpsons: Tapped Out. I grew up with watching them, quoting Bart, and even through out my life someone can always bring something back to this ever running show.
The Simpsons is one show that does a really great job at Halloween episodes. Treehouse Horror has even showcased an episode with zombies in 1992 named "Dial Z for Zombies". Man I was in kindergarten then! This show is old! So it is no wonder DeviantArt danosborne has created some wicked zombie Simpson art.

I am digging the detailed hairiness of Otto here to the left. Feel Otto just kinda is a zombie with him being all mellow most of the time.
Argck! Groundskeeper Willie

Z Nation

While I was missing my ultra fave and unbeatable zombie show, The Walking Dead, I had a hankering to see some Zs. Behold! Z Nation was the answer. Praise Netflix!
Nothing can compare to TWD with it's 5 seasons of lovable characters, a comic book series which the show is based off of, their own talk show after hours (The Talking Dead), books, and creative cast and crew that makes every episode a nail biting experience. I never have to clip my nails!

Z Nation is about a group trying to transport a fine "gentleman" named Murphy since he may be the only immune survivor after a zombie virus has spread the world in the last 3 years. Operation Bitemark is in place to get to Cali from NY to retrieve the antibodies to create a vaccine with the help of Citizen Z working his tech magic from NSA outpost in the Arctic.
One thing about this crew, they are way more light in the subject of zombies and death and BOY does death come quickly to a lot of the group. Who is in the group you ask? *SPOILERS AHEAD*

top left going clockwise:MICHAEL WELCH as Mack Thompson ;NAT ZANG as 10K; ANASTASIA BARANOVA as Addy Carver; KEITH ALLAN as Murphy; PISAY PAO as Cassandra; TOM EVERETT SCOTT as Sgt. Charles Garnett; KELLITA SMITH as Roberta Warren; and RUSSELL HODGKINSON as Doc
Remember Doing that thing you do? or Dead Man on Campus and even An American Werewolf in Paris? They all have one cutie in common! Tom Everett Scott. While he is one of the best looking of the cast and most recognizable in the group, his character Sgt. Charles Garnett doesn't last long. I was so devastated cuz things between him and the leading lady Roberta was getting STEAMY. Netflix teased me about his character and another guy being in the show for a long while since their faces were dominant in the picture preview. LIES!! This show may as well be called Game of Zs.

Without going into details about ALL the characters, one that is not in the picture above is a little not NEW GUY,  DJ Qualls. I've seen him more recently as a former reoccurring character on Supernatural.  Qualls character, Private First Class Simon Cruller aka Citizen Z, is a lone man safe from the danger of zombies but not from the duties of surveying the zombies and warning folks of anything disastrous like a zunami (a zombie tsunami). Qualls offers many laughs which is what I find great about this show.

Z Nation is fast paced, less in-depth with origin stories, not afraid to kill off characters, might be a little unrealistic with their zombies (which is saying something since z's are pretty sci-fi), and they have their own approach to zombies. They do seem to have the infinite bullet cheat when it comes to combat. Each character brings just enough laughs without making the entire show corny in their drama, horror approach.

The light-heartedness I get from the show is something I appreciate compared to the drama in TWD. Nothing can beat that show though! But if you just can't get enough Z's in your week, binge on some hilariously weird and quirky Z Nation.
Season 2 returns this year.

Monday Mention: Zombies Have Issues

Zombies have Issues

by

From the same guy that brought you Zombies Hate Stuff, here is another quick humor book dealing with zombies.
"With humor, wit, and braaaains, Greg Stones's colorful painted panels offer a sympathetically funny, new perspective into the trials and tribulations of the undead in a world made for the living." - Goodreads
Just like in Zombies Hate Stuff, categories appear like "Zombies have issues with" as one. One feature I guess they have problems with is their decaying selves, whether it is they look so gnarly or they just can't even see through their rotting eyes.

Another is...

Being OCD in the afterlife is a thing and lists are just something everyone enjoys dead or alive. My man would argue this.
Other enjoyments I liked included tornadoes to sweep up delicious red-shoed darlings and ignorance from sweet little ladies.

I giggled at some of the things zombies had MAJOR issues with...

  • banana peels
  • Greek mythology gods turning people to stone
  • Renaissance fairs
  • bunnies??? why I am not sure
With a really cute ending, this book gave me enough chuckles to give it a higher rating. I don't want to spoil it for you so please check the book out! Wanna see my review for Zombies Hate Stuff?? Click here.

Silent Night of the Living Dead!

I am so mature you guys!
Everybody loves to have a nativity set out during the holidays. We even had one in my house and we weren't exactly Jesus fans. Nevertheless they spew Christmas and they are quite fun to mess around with.--->

Being a zombie fan the best nativity set would be a zombie one and it looks like a Kickstarter tried to make our dreams come true this holiday. (It failed! CHRISTMAS IS RUINED!!) Still let us take a moment to relish in the awesomeness that could have been.
The gang is all here...well maybe missing a few parts.
We Three Spleens
Shepard boy is doing some major suckage at his job.
Could Mary be the next Daryl?? NEVER!!
